The legacy of the first Russian classical writer has always been a source of inspiration for great artists as well as for amateur musicians and composers of modest talent, who sincerely worshiped Pushkin’s genius. Composers who were Pushkin’s contemporaries captured his poetry “at a distance of breathing”. Those of later generations searched for inspiration in Pushkin time and again. They came to comprehend his genre, the lyrical and dramatic aspects of his poetry as well as its philosophy. Today Pushkin still excites and thrills the hearts and minds of musicians. The programme on the poet’s birth anniversary is a mini anthology of romances to Pushkin’s poems: from the first Russian classical composer Mikhail Glinka to Sergey Rachmaninov, Nikolay Medtner and Georgy Sviridov.
