Music by Antonin Leopold Dvorak (1841–1904), the author of the renown opera Rusalka, Slavonic Dances, the symphony From the New World (composed in the USA, where Dvorak worked for three years), eight other symphonies, concertos, chamber ensembles gained popularity with the public within Dvorak’s lifetime. He used motifs and elements of the folk music of Moravia and Bohemia. And the pieces of the “American” period are a unique mix of Slavonic, Afro-American and Native American music traditions.
An important part of the composer’s legacy is chamber-vocal music remarkable for its tender lyrism, brightness and clearness. Dvorak worked in this genre all his life, reflecting all the themes and events that concerned the composer.
