A little over a year ago premature death removed from our midst Dmitri Kogan, a world famous violinist, Honoured Artist of Russia, Honorary Professor of the Ural and Athens conservatories, artistic director of a number of festivals and projects (The Musical Kremlin, The Arctic Classical Music Festival, Kogan Festival, The High Music, to name a few). The death of this talented, young and incredibly active person became a real tragedy for the artistic community.
Dmitri Kogan was a member of a famous musical dynasty. His grandfather was the famous violinist Leonid Kogan, his grandmother – the violinist and teacher Elizabeth Gilels, his father, Pavel Kogan, is a conductor, and his mother, Lyubov Kazinskaya, is a pianist. The family traditions played an important role in the musician’s formation. To be a grandson of the iconic violinist was a great responsibility. As Dmitri himself recollected, from his childhood his play was assessed scrupulously; he was never excused for inaccuracies and irregularities and was always compared with his grandfather. This helped the future virtuoso develop a critical eye, and that is why Dmitri Kogan continued fittingly the good work of the great musical dynasty.
He was never confused by difficulties. He played not only in academic halls, but also for the children and adults who had lived through the horrible tragedy in Beslan. He was the first violinist to play for the polar explorers at the North Pole. Dmitri Kogan did a lot to propagate the classical arts in Russian regions. His Five Great Violins project let audiences indifferent cities and towns hear the sound of the instruments by the violin past-masters. A highlight of his repertoire was Paganini’s 24 Caprices which only a few violinists in the world are able to perform. He regularly performed in concert halls of Russia, Europe, Asia, America, Australia, Middle East, the CIS and the Baltic countries.
The violinist performed at the Novaya Opera three times with The Moscow Camerata orchestra where he had been the artistic director since 2014. The two concerts in 2015 comprised music of various composers including compositions by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk (Alfeyev), the special guest of the coming concert. In March 2016, The Italian Collection concert featuring Dmitri Kogan, Moscow camerata, the Novaya Opera soloists and Dmitry Sibirtev (piano) became the jewel in the theatre’s repertoire.
