The Rossini musical divertissement was conceived as a concert to commemorate the second centenary of Gioachino Rossini’s birth. However, the dramatic nature inherent in all productions of the Novaya Opera since its inception transformed the traditional sequence of numbers into a fascinating journey through a musical labyrinth made of Rossini’s solo, ensemble, choral and orchestral masterpieces.
The sparkling, fast-moving composition comprises excerpts from the operas L’Italiana in Algeri, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Ciro in Babilonia, La Cenerentola, Guillaume Tell, sacred music Stabat Mater and Petite Messe Solennelle (Agnus Dei), small vocal pieces including the comic Duet of Cats and La chanson du bébé. The excerpts are combined to create an atmosphere of festivity, admiration and adoration which makes you feel as if you are indeed at Rossini’s birthday party.
