The theme of the In the Shadow of Tomorrow concert is Art Nouveau and its sources. The music culture of the late 19thand early 20th centuries is complex and contradictory. It strangely combines a search for new forms and use of the cultural achievements of the past as a source of inspiration. Some composers find their inspiration in Renaissance poetry, others turn to musical inventions of Baroque, still others are inspired by the refined art of the Fete galante (the 18th century). These and other parallels are reflected in the programme of the In the Shadow of Tomorrow concert. It comprises pieces by French, English, German and Italian composers, ranging from Rameau to Poulenc, from Purcell to Britten, from Monteverdi to Respighi, from Bach to Argente. There’s a kind of dialogue between the musical instruments, particularly the piano and the harpsichord.
