| | | | | 24 October’17 Tuesday 19:00 Due Maestri As a part of the Vasily Ladyuk’s festival OPERA LIVE The Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Vladimir Spivakov Boys Choir of the Sveshnikov Choir College “That we listen to classical music with serious faces is one of nature’s best jokes.” (from the TV-film The Very Same Munchhausen). The comic in musical art is a really unfailing theme; pleasantry, burlesque, irony have been constant companions of music since its inception. Various comic situations often give occasion to fine stylistic play, which brings to light the composer’s mastery. Vasily Ladyuk’s OPERA LIVE musical festival presents rarely performed compositions of the Enlightenment age: the comic cantata Der Schulmeister (The Schoolmaster) by Georg Philipp Telemann(181–1767) and the one-act intermezzo Il Maestro di Cappella (The Music Teacher) by Domenico Cimarosa (1749–1801). Each of the pieces is a sort of humorous musical picture of the main character. The Schoolmaster is a pompous know-it-all, teaching solfeggio to children and lecturing on them beyond all measure. The Music Teacher is a high-flying orchestra conductor, obstinately rehearsing intricate melodic curves and methods of phonation. The former is engaged in a cranky dialogue with the boys’ choir, while the latter, with the orchestra. The plots of both compositions are simple and conditional: the prevailing part is played by the elegant baroque music with its plentiful instrumental and vocal glories.
