All the main roles in the opera are full of drama: the vengeful Dejanira, who sank into madness because of jealousy and killed her husband, Hercules; beautiful and appealing Iole, Hercules’s captive, and Hercules himself, who dies in terrible suffering because of Dejanira… The opera was premiered in concert in London on January 5, 1745. But the first performance of the masterpiece was given a chilly reception. Handel’s original treatment of the antique tragedy gained success much later. |
