The Battle of Borodino, which was the turning point in this war and one of the bloodiest battles in history, will forever be a high example of patriotism, immense fortitude and courage of the Russian people in their fight for independence against the French army. The heroic deed of the Russian soldiers who stopped the invincible Napoleon and successfully defended their homeland has many times been immortalized in literature and art: in Leo Tolstoy’s monumental novel War and Peace, Mikhail Lermontov’s famous poem Borodino, the works of the artist Vassily Vereshchagin and the architect Konstantin Ton, music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Sergei Prokofiev. Tchaikovsky’s 1812. Ceremonial Overture and arias and choruses from Prokofiev’s War and Peace will be the highlights of the Novaya Opera’s gala concert to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino. The concert programme also includes other patriotic works by Russian composers: Ivan Susanin’s dying aria and the chorus “Glory, glory to you, holy Rus” from Glinka’s opera A Life for the Tsar, the chorus “Arise, ye Russian People” from Prokofiev’s cantata Alexander Nevsky, the Warrior’s Arioso from Tchaikovsky’s Moscow Cantata, and old military marches and songs, which will help recreate the spirit of the epoch of Emperor Alexander I and the great Russian commanders Kutuzov, Bagration and Barclay de Tolly.
