R.I.P. (26.02.2016)

The Novaya Opera Theatre deeply regrets to announce that Eri Klas, Peoples Artist of USSR, has died at the age of 76. The death of the great conductor is a great loss to music, musicians, opera goers, spectators.

For many of us at the Novaya Opera it is also a great personal loss. Eri Klas was always full of joy and kindness. He was a radiant personality, akin to Mozart in his radiance. Behind this was his profound knowledge of the profession, love of music and sincere respect for his colleagues. He was loved and admired by soloists, orchestra members and choir singers. He revealed in musicians their best qualities and masterfully joined individualities in collective creative work.

Eri Klas collaborated with the Novaya Opera for fifteen years, and between 2006 and 2011 he was the Chief Conductor of the theatre. His romance with the Novaya Opera was very happy: there he created a number of productions (two of them, Donizetti's L'elisir d'amor and Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, are still successfully performed) and a few concert programmes, and recorded CDs.

We all remember the concert on November 10, 2013 at the end of the Two Masters – Two Worlds International Festival. The great Matti Salminen performed excerpts from Verdi's and Wagner’s operas with the orchestra conducted by Eri Klas. Alas, this concert turned out to be the last chapter in the romance of the Conductor and the Theatre. And, undoubtedly, we were happy when in 2014 our Eri won the Golden Mask National Theatre Award. And today we bid farewell to our dear Friend and Colleague. Our desiderium is immeasurable. Our grief is deep.

Dear Eri, thank you for all these marvellous years!
