Filippo Arlia,

Guest Conductor. Filippo Arlia is an Italian conductor, pianist and teacher. International critics regard him as one of the most brilliant and versatile musicians of his generation. At the age of 17 he graduated with honors from the piano class at the Fausto Torrefranca Conservatory in Vibo Valentia.
 

Since 2008, he has promoted Duettango, one of the most famous Italian chamber ensembles making interpretations of Astor Piazzolla’s works. In 2015, Duettango successfully debuted in Weill Recital Hall in New York (Carnegie Hall). In 2017, they issued an album to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Astor Piazzolla’s death, which was published in 16 countries. The album was awarded the Piazzolla Award and the Orpheus award in 2018.

 

In 2011, Arlia decided to devote his life to conducting and founded the Calabria Philharmonic Orchestra of which he is Principal Conductor. He has collaborated with famous musicians such as Sergei Krylov, Yuri Shishkin, Michel Camilo, Sergei Nakariakov and Ilya Grubert.

 

He has held more than 350 concerts as a soloist and conductor in more than 20 countries. He has conducted the Orchestra De Tineret of Cluj (Romania), the Cukurova State Symphony Orchestra of Adana (Turkey), the Mihail Jora Philharmonic Orchestra of Bacau (Romania), the Pacific Symphony Orchestra of Vladivostok, the Orchestra City of Ferrara, the New Scarlatti Orchestra of Naples, the Sanremo Symphony Orchestra (Italy), the Orkestra Akademik Baskent of Ankara (Turkey), the Symphony Orchestra of the Estado of Mexico, the Nuevo Leon University Orchestra of Monterrey, the Haifa Symphony Orchestra (Israel), the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hungarian National Symphony Orchestra, the New England Symphony Orchestra, the Astana Philarmonic Orchestra (Kazakhstan), Orquestra do Norte di Porto, the orchestra of the State Opera Plovdiv (Bulgaria).

 

In 2016, he debuted as conductor at some of the most prestigious venues in the world: the Carnegie Hall in New York with Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 Unfinished; the Cairo Opera House with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4; the Auditorio Nacional de Musica in Madrid with Beethoven Symphony No. 3 Heroic. In 2018, he was approved as conductor of the concert Dedication to Rossini at the Carnegie Hall.

 

He has also performed as a pianist and conductor in some famous halls such as the Mary Flager Cary Hall in New York, the Rachmaninov Hall in Moscow, the University of Auckland, the Scarlatti Hall in Naples, the Menotti Teatro Nuovo in Spoleto, the Teatro dell’Opera of the Casinò di Sanremo.

 

During the tour in China in 2016, he debuted at the Tianjin Grand Theatre and the Harbin Opera House with Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana and Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci with Dimitra Theodossiou as Santuzza. In 2017, he debuted at the Taormina Greek Theatre, where he conducted Verdi’s Aida with Giovanna Casolla as Amneris. He also debuted with Verdi’s Otello in the Astrakhan Opera and Ballet Theatre.

 

Filippo Arlia is often invited to work in juries of international contests such as the Silvio Bengali Piano Competition (Val Tidone, Italy), the Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition in Rome and the George Gershwin International Music Competition in New York.

 

Since 2014, Arlia has been conductor and Professor of the piano department and the conducting department at the Tchaikovsky Institute of Music Studies (Nocera Terinese, Italy) and Music Director of the Opera Festival at the Taormina Greek Theatre. In 2018, he was Artistic Director of the Leoncavallo International Music Festival in Montalto Uffugo (Italy).

 

In 2017, Filippo Arlia was awarded the Golden Medal of La Sapienza Rome University for the highest orchestra technique and splendid interpretation of symphonic repertoire of the 20th century.
