Fabio Mastrangelo,

Fabio was born in Bari (Italy). He received his first degree in music at the Piano Department of the Niccolo Piccinni Conservatory in Bari. When a student, he won national piano competitions in Osimo (1980) and in Rome (1986). He did advanced study courses at the Geneva Conservatory and at the Royal Academy of Music in London and attended master classes by Ciccolini, Lipkin and Badura-Skoda. Fabio Mastrangelo is still a concert pianist performing in Italy, Canada, the USA and Russia.

Fabio Mastrangelo studied conducting with Gilberto Serembe at the Pescare Music Academy, with Leonard Bernstein and Karl Österreicher in Vienna and at the St. Cecilia Academy in Rome. He attended master classes of Neeme Jarvi and Jorma Panula. In 1990, he won a grant to study at the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto. After graduation he set up the Virtuosi di Toronto chamber orchestra and the Hart House string orchestra at the Univerity of Toronto. Later he taught conducting at the Faculty of Music.

Fabio Mastrangelo is a prize-winner of international competitions for young conductors such as Mario Gusella– 1993, Mario Gusella– 1995 (Pescara) and Donatella Flick – 2000 (London).

As a guest conductor, Fabio has worked with the National Academy Orchestra in Hamilton and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra (Canada), the Symphony Orchestra of the North Carolina State University at Greensboro, the String Orchestra of the Vienna Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, the Symphonietta Riga Orchestra, the Ukraine National Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestras of Tampere (Finland), Bacau (Romania) and Nizza (France), the Symphony Orchestras of Windsor, Winnipeg, Kitchener-Waterloo, Brantford, Szeged (Hungary) and Pärnu (Estonia), the Orchestra of the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and the Vancouver Opera Orchestra.

In 1997, Fabio Mastrangelo became the Principal Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra in the Province of Bari; he conducted the orchestras of Taranto, Palermo and Pescara and the Rome Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2005–2007, he was the Music Director of the Società dei Concerti Orchestra in Bari, touring twice in Japan.

Fabio also performs with the Vilnius Symphony Orchestra, the Arena di Verona Orchestra, the symphony orchestras of the St. Petersburg and Moscow Philharmonic Societies, the Novaya Rossiya State Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra led by Pavel Kogan, the Moscow Symphony Orchestra Russian Philharmonic, the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, the St. Petersburg State Capella Orchestra, the orchestras of Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg and others. In 2001–2006, he was director of the Étoiles du Château de Chailly international festival in France.

As an opera conductor, Fabio Mastrangelo worked with the Rome National Opera Theatre where he conducted Verdi’s Aida in 2009 and opera houses in St. Petersburg and Voronezh. Since 2006, he has been Chief Guest Conductor at Petruzzelli Theatre in Bari, the youngest opera theatre in Italy, which has recently been listed as one of Italy’s best theatres. His production of La bohème (2008) was a tremendous success.

During three years Fabio Mastrangelo collaborated with the Yekaterinburg State Opera and Ballet Theatre, initially as Principal Guest Conductor (2007–2009) and then as Principal Conductor (2009–2010), where he staged Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, Puccini’s La bohème and the ballet Love and Death. He has also conducted the repertoire productions of Puccini’s Tosca and Madama Butterfly, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Verdi’s La traviata and Rigoletto, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden, and the ballets Giselle and Romeo and Juliet.

In 2007, Fabio Mastrangelo made his conducting debut at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg with the opera Tosca featuring Maria Guleghina and Vladimir Galouzine. In 2008, he first appeared at the Stars of White Nights festival in St. Petersburg.

In the summer of 2009, Fabio conducted a new production of Aida at the Taormina Arte Festival in Sicilia. In 2010, he was invited to the festival to conduct Enrico Castiglione’s new production of Turandot .Both productions were recorded on DVD.

In December 2009, Fabio debuted at the opera theatre of the Italian city of Sassari with a new production of Lucia di Lammermoor. In 2010, he performed for the first time at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, conducting Tosca. In the same year Fabio conducted a new production of Aida, staged by Alexander Kuranov, at the Hermitage Theatre in St. Petersburg. In 2011, he debuted at the Krasnoyarsk Opera Theatre, conducting La traviata, Tosca and Rigoletto. He was invited again by Arena di Verona to conduct Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. In the 2010–2011 season, the conductor toured with the State Hermitage Orchestra in Italy and Norway where they gave two concerts at Nordlyfestivalen.

In June 2011, Fabio Mastrangelo first conducted the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra in Moscow and Kiev. Fabio Mastrangelo debuted in the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in 2014.

In 2016, Fabio Mastrangelo debuted with the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, the Belgrade Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic, the Thüringer Symphoniker Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, the Banská Bystrica Opera Theatre (Tosca production), the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre (Compitizione dell’ Opera), in the Lucerne Concert Hall. He opened his fifth Opera to All festival with a new production of Borodin’s Prince Igor and closed it with Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. He participated in the Montecatini Opera Festival, which was a great success.

Fabio Mastrangelo first appeared at the Novaya Opera in January 2013 when he conducted Verdi's Rigoletto at the Epiphany Week Festival.
